Who we are

IF YOU HAVE REACHED THIS PAGE FROM GOOGLE PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST POSTS FOR TERM DATES.   Click on the Home Page link

We are Artists on the Green.

The name arises from the location of Hempton Village hall where we meet and which is situated on the edge of Hempton Common to the south of Fakenham.
The club was formed in January 2019 from members and ex-members of Tina Sutton's Tuesday art class at Hempton. Tina retired in December last year and the members of her class agreed that they would like to continue meeting and painting together. We have a current membership of just under 20 and have a few vacancies for new members. This is kept under review.
We meet every Tuesday at the Hempton Village hall from 10.00 am. to 12.30 am. following the local school term dates. Our meeting dates for the current year are set out below:-

2019 Term Dates
Tuesdays
Spring Term : 8th Jan . - 9th April
Half term : 19th &  26th. Feb.
Summer Term : 30th April - 30th July
Half Term : 28th May
Autumn Term :  10th Sep. - 10th Dec.

Tina Sutton ran two other art classes being at Marsham on Monday & Wednesday mornings. On her retirement they too decided to form art groups and we have a reciprocal visiting arrangement with our sister clubs. Those club members who wish to use the facilities at either of the Marsham clubs will find their meeting dates on Tina's blog at www.tinasnorfolkartcourse.blogspot.com/. Show your club membership card on arrival.

What we do

We are painting or drawing in a variety of media with the subject for the period up to half term of "Winter". This has been loosely interpreted by the members. A selection of present work appears in the gallery. The subject for the remainder of this term is “Spring”

Housekeeping

The annual membership fee for 2019 is £10 with an additional subscription taken from members at the start of each term to cover the balance of hire fees and other costs as determined by attending numbers for that term.
We have collected a certain amount of source material and have a library which the members can borrow for added inspiration.  Members have been sourcing ideas from the internet, magazines and own photographs. Assistance is available for those of our number who do not have access to the internet.
Buying materials from local art shops can be expensive and a number of our members shop online from various sources including SAA, Jackson's. Amazon, Great Art, Art Discount (Granthams) & Ken Bromley to name just a few. It is thus worthwhile comparing prices from various sources bearing in mind quoted postal costs. Several of the above are post free over a certain amount. All the above organisations and other online suppliers have sales and special offers from time to time. In addition they issue various limited duration discount codes and we will post any successful codes or offers as advised by members.
The various duties of the club are undertaken by our members on an informal basis.

Notice Board

Discount Codes

This is a facility that I have found to work if you shop online using Google. It is a small program called an extension which sits in the Google toolbar. It holds a database of discount codes and applies to your shopping basket any applicable ones that it holds relating to the site on which you are shopping. The extension is called "Honey" and can be accessed and installed as follows:-

·         In Google click on the three vertical dots at the end of the toolbar.

·         click on "more tasks"

·         click on "extensions"

·         select and click to install Honey from the list shown.

Next time you shop in Google and go to pay Honey will open a small box and offer to search for discount codes If it finds any it will try each in turn and apply the best one. If it does not find any it will tell you.

We have set a further challenge to run for the next 3 weeks. A previously this is for members wishing for subject direction. The general term theme is Summer but the express challenge is "Reflections". Again this can be in any medium and interpreted in whatever way takes your imagination but ponds, rivers and water in general springs to mind!!!

LOCAL ART COURSES

We have been in contact with Bob Larking, a local artist who runs day classes and summer schools and who is already known to some of our members. If anyone is interested we have a selection of his brochures on the club file.

TIMETABLE NOTES

At the request of the members we have decided from time to time to invite local artists to the morning sessions to give short workshops on specific topics. The first visit is by Steve Cale on the 9th July. He will be demonstrating in watercolour with the subject of trees and landscapes. It has been decided that we will make a small charge per member to offset expenses. The charge for Steve's visit will be £5. Would you please let Madelene know if you will be attending.

Press F11 key again to return to your normal screen with the toolbars.

Diary Notes

We return from the Summer break on Tuesday 10th September.

The Autumn term's subscription will be £30.

The term theme will be "Autumn" - autumnal colours, fruits and leaves, fireworks etc.

Steve Cale's first visit was a success so we have booked him again for a return visit on Tuesday the 8th. October. This time he will give a demonstration in acrylics painting an abstract landscape. He has suggested suitable materials and I will circulate a list nearer to the event. Suffice it to say all those people who painted in acrylics with Tina should have everything necessary. However he has suggested a list of colours that he will be using and I will include this in my e-mail.

Autumn Term First Challenge:

The first term's challenge will be creating a poster style landscape either real or imaginary- for inspiration Google "Brian Cook" or "railway posters". There are several examples on the internet and it is looked on as a particular style of painting. Further guidance notes will be e-mailed to those members who wish to take part.

Spring Term 2020

This is to confirm the dates for the Spring Term 2020. We start on Tuesday 7th. January and run to Tuesday 31st. March with the half-term break being on Tuesday 18th. February.
The fee for next term will be a total of £30 being comprised of £10 annual membership fee and £20 for the term's facilities.

Review of Club Year 2019

We started the year with just under 20 members and finished with the same number. The club/art group was an experiment being a group of people who enjoyed painting and each other's company and wished to continue painting together. There is a large difference between a structured class with a class tutor and a group who meet up to paint on their own. However the club exceeded expectations as evidenced by the continued membership and the examples of  work on the blog - just under 300 pictures at the last count. This success is all due to the members who supported us turning out in all weathers. .Also a special thanks to those heroes (or more accurately heroines) who managed our budget, kept us supplied with tea and coffee, acted as key holder/doorkeeper, managed the club library and the bakers who kept us well fed!

During the year we branched out with two visits from local artist Steve Cale. These were very well received and Steve has been booked to return again in the Spring. The club view is that we would like to extend guest visits next year so if anyone has suggestions for other artists to come and talk/demonstrate to us we will follow these up. Also this is your club so if there is anything else you would like us to do next year please mention it.

Finally a special thanks to Tina who made this all possible in the first place.

It remains to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Looking forward to meeting up again in January.

Spring Term 2020
Welcome back.

The general subject for this term is appropriately winter namely frosts, snow, ice and all that goes with it!

There was more than one suggestion for the first term project so it is up to you whether you combine these or treat them separately.

Firstly it was suggested that we could paint an urban scene possibly a skyline or a town street the scope is wide and several members have already painted this type of subject in the past. If you wish to stretch it a bit further then include pedestrians and vehicles.

The second suggestion was for a night scene at night or possibly late sunset or very early sunrise remembering that the sky is seldom pitch black and the use of black as a colour on it's own tends to deaden a picture.

Finally we have opened a new gallery page so that if anyone has pictures that they would like to share but that have not yet been published on the blog can you please bring them in for photographing.

Steve Cale's visit on the 10th March.

This is to welcome Steve back to the club. He will be demonstrating painting a seascape in acrylic. Would members please bring in their acrylic paints, brushes and canvas board or canvas paper supported on a drawing board. He has suggested the colours that he will be using and these are as follows:- Ultramarine Blue, Paynes Grey,  White & then either Pale Cadmium yellow or Lemon Yellow may be useful & maybe a touch of Crimson.

Coronavirus update:
Due to Government Directives we will regrettably have to close the club for the rest of this term and also for the Summer term. We hope to reopen on Tuesday 8th. September.  Keep safe and well.

Covid 19 update - Autumn 2020

This is an advance notification.

With the easing of lockdown restrictions the Hempton Village hall is once again available for our Tuesday morning use subject to various user requirements. With this in mind we are exploring the possibility of reopening for the Autumn term on Tuesday 8th. September. To this end we will be polling members in early August to see if there is sufficient interest to reopening on that date.

If you feel doubtful you will not be letting the club down if you wish to defer your return. The club is for the benefit and at the direction of its members. Subject to sufficient numbers wishing to return we will consider the various requirements called for and then let the hall trustees know accordingly. As it may affect your decision it is recommended that you read the hall's requirements as set out below.

There is no need to make a decision as of now (19/07/2020) but we will be asking you to let us know when we next contact you in August.

Hope that we can get back to painting soon!

Bev.

Hempton Memorial Hall, Covid-19 risk assessment

Social distancing & restrictions

·         All hirers/users of the hall must observe social distancing at all times.

·         Observe all the markings in the courtyard and the hall lobby.

·         It is the responsibility of the group leader of each event to ensure that social distancing is maintained inside the hall.

·         There must be no more than 30 people in the hall and stage area at any time.

·         At the moment no singing, shouting or energetic exercises are allowed.

“Pinch points”

·         To ease pinch points users must enter by the main front door and exit by the door to the green.

·         There should be no more than one person in each toilet at any time.  The only exception being a parent and child.  Please lock the outside door of the toilet when in use.  People should wait in the main hall to go through the lobby to the toilets.

·         There should be no more than two people in the kitchen at any time.

Toilets

·         Hand driers are ‘out of use’ to stop risk of spreading the virus.

·         Rigorous hand washing should be observed and hand towels should be used and disposed of in the bins provided.

Kitchen

·         All users are advised to bring their own food and drink.

·         If hall crockery is used these must be thoroughly cleaned after use and the hirer must provide their own washing-up equipment and tea towels.

Cleanliness

·         The hall committee will make every effort to ensure that the hall is scrupulously clean.  However, it is impossible for the cleaner to be present between every hiring.  The leader of each group/event must therefore be responsible for ensuring that a thorough cleaning of the door handles, basins, toilet seats, tables, etc. when used, are carried out both before  and after using the hall.  All cleaning equipment will be provided and kept in a cupboard in the kitchen.

·         It is advised that all hirers use gloves when using the alarm pad.

Illness

·         Should someone show signs of Covid-19 they should be taken to the hall lobby to await assistance.   Someone should stop anyone entering via the main entrance.

·         The leader must have all contact details of those attending and be responsible for contacting all attending.  Other members of the group must then exit by the side door onto the green.

·         Please inform Laura of any such incident.

Windows

·         It is believed that some form of fresh air is advisable.  One half of both inner and outer entry doors can be hooked back.  If any windows are opened, please ensure that you close them and clean the handles when you leave.
